ETIAS for Australian citizens is a simple process that consists of filling out a an online application form and awaiting approval. The ETIAS has been in development since 2016 and is expected to come into effect in 2022 in a bid to improve security and border control surveillance in Europe.
Traveling to Spain from Australia with an ETIAS
Up to 60 different countries will be entitled to apply for an ETIAS, including Australia. Citizens will be able to travel to Spain from Australia with an ETIAS that they will have obtained via the online application form process. It is expected that more countries will e incorporated in the list of eligible countries for ETIAS application.
In order to receive an approved ETIAS travel authorization, applicants need to be able to fulfill the basic ETIAS requirements. There is more information regarding requirements and documents required for ETIAS application further below in the Passport and Documents Needed section.
The ETIAS will allow applicants a stay of up to 90 days at a time, although the ETIAS is valid during a period of 3 years. With an ETIAS Spain, you can also travel to other EU countries that form part of the Schengen zone.
ETIAS Application for Australian Citizens
Australian citizens will apply for an ETIAS Spain by filling out an online application form which should be submitted for approval. The data will be cross-checked by European security databases before it is approved. It is important to double-check all information before submitting the application form, as errors can cause your application to be rejected or invalid.
The application form will consist of basic information such as personal details, trip details, and passport details, as well as security questions. The confirmation and status of your ETIAS will be emailed to the email address listed in the application form.
Passport and Documents Needed
Australians should check that their passport is valid and also valid at the time and whole period of the visit to Spain (and other European countries planned to visit).
In addition to a valid passport, Australian citizens will also need to provide a valid email address for receiving the ETIAS, and a credit or debit card with which they can pay the small ETIAS fee.
Australian Embassy and Consulates in Spain
Australia has an Australian Embassy in Madrid. It does not currently have any consulates in other areas of Spain. However, unless there is a problem with your ETIAS travel authorization or you require a long-term visa, residency permit or other documents and permits, there is no need to visit the embassy in Spain. You will be able to apply for an ETIAS online prior to your visit if you plan to travel to Spain from Australia in 2022 or later.
Spanish Embassy and Consulates in Australia
There is a Spanish Embassy in Canberra, and two consulate generals in Melbourne and Sydney. Unless a different service is required, it won’t be necessary to visit an embassy in order to obtain an ETIAS Spain.
